The 7th Australia-China Symposium on Science, Technology and Education

At Jacaranda season, the Federation of Chinese Scholars in Australia (FOCSA) has its end of year event. The 7th Australia-China Symposium in Education, Science and Technology (7th FOCSA Symposium), is held during 28- 30 November at University of Sydney. The symposium brought together about 200 participants who are the executive officers, leading experts and scholars from both Australia and China.

在蓝花楹盛开的季节, 全澳华人专家学者联合会(FOCSA)举行了今年最后一项活动, “第七届澳中教育科技研讨会”。会议与2017年 11 月 28-30 日 悉尼大学举行, 有近 200 名来自澳大利亚和中国的知名专家学者和企业高管出席了会议。

The aims of the Symposium are: 1) to further the bilateral understanding of some highly important issues in education, science and technology, concerning both countries, 2) to facilitate more fruitful collaboration and cooperation in all disciplines of science, technology and education between Australia and China, by providing a forum for exchange of ideas and networking among representatives from academia, research organizations, and governments, and 3) to report and review the latest developments and progresses in the areas of interest through the invited keynote addresses and selected presentations. The Symposium will also focus on some strategic topics of interest to both countries, such as future high education, science and technology without boarder, technology transfer, innovation in science and technology.

本次研讨会的目的是:1)进一步深化两国对教育及 科技领域重要问题相互了解和共识; 2)为学术界, 研究机构和政府参会代表提供交流的平台,促进澳中 在教育,科学,技术等各个领域开展 更有成效的合作;3)邀请的主旨演讲对共同兴趣领域的最新进展回顾 和展望。本次研讨会还将围绕 未来高等教育,无界科技,技术转让,科技创新等重点战略性课题展开讨论。

Networking nowadays appears very critical for career development of academics, in particular for the early- career researchers, in applying for research grants from governments, developing collaboration, attracting research funding from industry etc., 7th FOCSA Symposium will serve as a forum to enhance the bilateral support between researchers in the same areas or disciplines, fostering their excellence in research and promoting successes in their endeavours.

当今,扩展人际网络对于学者的职业发展非常重要,特别是对于早期职业的研究人员, 如申请政府研究经费,与他人开展合作,吸引来自工业界的研究经费等等。 第七届 FOCSA 研讨会作为一个论坛,旨在加强在研究人员相互了解和双向支持, 促进他们的研究和取得成功的机会。

This year, the Symposium includes wide topics, such as new materials technologies, additive manufacturing, big data, machine learning and AI, green energy, Innovative manufacturing, sustainability, technology translation, new medicines and Nutrition, etc. Prof Lin Ye, President of FOCSA chaired the opening session. Prof Duncan Ivison, DVC(R), USyd and Mr Ping Lu, Minister-counsellor, Education, from Consulate General of China in Sydney made opening speech and congratulated the 7th FOCSA Symposium. Prof Andrew B. Holmes, President of Australian Academy of Science (AAS) gave a keynote address on Australia-China Scientific and Technical Collaboration: Past, Present and Future. Another invited keynote speech by Prof Hugh Bradlow President of Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) titled the implications of digital disruption for education. Both talks were very enlightening and won great appreciations from audience.

今年的研讨会包括新材料技术,增材制造,大数据, 机器学习和人工智能,绿色能源,创新制造,可持续性,技术翻译,新药和营养等广泛的课题。 FOCSA 主席林叶教授主持了开幕式。悉尼大学副校长 Duncan Ivison 教授和中国驻悉尼总领事馆科技参赞卢平先生先后致开幕词,祝贺第七届 FOCSA 研讨会召开并祝研讨会圆满成功。 澳大利亚科学院院长安德鲁·霍姆斯( Andrew B.Holmes)教授就“澳中科技合作的过去,现在和未来” 发表了主题演讲。澳大利亚技术与工程学院(ATSE) 院长休·布莱德洛(Hugh Bradlow)教授做了题为“数字带来的颠覆性对教育的影响”的主旨演讲。他们的讲演非常精彩并具有深刻启发性,受到了与会者的高度赞赏。

Prof Mark Hoffman, Dean of Engineering, UNSW gave a talk on the future of engineering education and research. Prof Stephen Garton, Provost & DVC, USyd, gave a talk titled Enhancing STEM Education and Research – Challenges for the 21st century.

新南威尔士大学工程学院院长 Mark Hoffman 教授就“工程教育和研究的未来”发表了讲话。悉尼大学Stephen Garton 教授发表了题为 “增强 STEM 教育与研究 - 21 世纪的挑战” 的演讲。

Prof Aibing Yu, PVC and President (Suzhou), Monash University, offered his experience in How to develop big Australia-China joint collaborative research initiatives, which was well received by audience.


There are several prominent scholars in the world China who are invited as guests from China, including Prof Jingshen Wu, Hong Kong University of Sciences and Technology, Dr Wenqiang Xu, CTO, the National Institute of Clean-and-low-carbon Energy (NICE), China, etc. Many Australian scholars mainly from universities also gave their talks to the Symposium. This includes but is not limited to, Prof Shixue Dou, FTSE, from University of Wollongong, Prof Yiu-Wing Mai, FAA, FTSE, from University of Sydney, Prof Chengqi Zhang, Executive Director of Data Science, University of Technology Sydney, Prof Stefan Williams, the Australian centre for field robotics from University of Sydney

与会者中还有来自中国大陆,香港等地的世界著名学者,如香港科技大学的吴景深教授,北京低碳清洁能源研究所首席技术官徐文强博士等。 还有许多澳大利亚当地学者为研讨会作了发言,包括但不仅限于,著名超导专家伍仑贡大学窦士学教授(工程院院士),悉尼大学米耀荣教授(双院院士),悉尼科技大学数字科学执行主任张张成奇教授,悉尼大学澳大利亚现场机器人中心主任Stefan Williams教授。
