V. MOST SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS AND DISTINCTIONS:
Research: Professor Yu is one of the originators of the terminal sliding mode control theory which is for designing simple and fast industrial controllers. He was the first to discover chaotic discretization behaviours in sliding mode control systems.

Technological Innovation: Professor Yu has contributed significantly to addressing industrial problems by developing innovative practical solutions, evidenced by being awarded 11 ARC Linkage grants totaling over $4 million with industry partners in the sectors of Manufacturing, Energy, Transport, Aerospace, Security and Health. His team developed a smart decision support process control technology that has been used widely.

Research Management: Professor Yu has held a number of senior research management positions, including Research Institute Director, Associate Dean (Research), Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) and Vice President, and membership on boards and committees of public companies and research centres such as Photonics CRC and Advanced Manufacturing CRC. He has extensive experience in facilitating research cooperation between research and industry, chairing committees and reviews.

Professor Yu has made outstanding contributions to Variable Structure Systems – a branch of systems and control, and their applications in intelligent and complex systems. He published over 400 papers in technical journals, books and conferences, including over 150 journal articles.

Scientific Citations (on the 22th of October, 2012): According to ISI Web of Science, his work was cited 2977 times with h-index 31 and according to Google Scholar he received 5730 citations with h-index 37.
